Smoke-free Campus
HKU is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not allowed on campus, both indoors and outdoors.
Amenities Centres

CEDARS manages three amenities centres. The facilities are open for use by students and staff as individuals or groups. Some facilities can be booked online for exclusive use. Priority is given to students, student societies, and student organised activities.

Campus Catering 

On campus, there are various restaurants, cafeterias, coffee shops, vending machines and food kiosks at convenient locations that offer a wide range of local delicacies, cuisines, Halal food, coffee, pastries and vegetarian food, where you can enjoy with your friends at a reasonable price range. The food kiosks and vending hubs  scattered around the Main Campus and Sassoon Road Campus offering light meals, beverages and snacks for those with tight schedule or in a rush.

Chong Yuet Ming Cultural Centre

Chong Yuet Ming Cultural Centre (CYMCC), is located on the 3/F and 4/F above the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre on the Main Campus.

Studio 303 with a capacity of 148 seats, is an ideal performing venue for experimental performances in a variety of art forms, such as drama, dance, musical performance and theatrical workshop.

Computing and Network Facilities

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides comprehensive information technology services such as HKU Portal, procedures on connecting to HKU Campus Network and email service etc. 

You may visit ITS Service Desk at the Room 204, 2/F, K.K. Leung Building or send email to ithelp@hku.hk for assistance in using the central computing and network services.

Daily Life Necessities

Student Lockers
All HKU students with a valid HKU Portal account are eligible to rent an e-locker. E-lockers are for temporary storage up to a maximum of 7 consecutive calendar days with the rental fee of HK$1 per hour. Renting of the e-locker is on a first-come- first-served basis, supported by the mobile app called “uLock@hku”. Traditional lockers are also available for application by full-time undergraduate students for longer use of up to one academic year. Students can apply for a traditional locker via a central application system and the allocation is by random ballot.
Shuttle Bus Service
The Estates Office operates shuttle bus service for students to travel among various campuses and offices. The service is restricted to HKU students and staff only, thus passengers are required to present their student/staff cards for identification purpose.

KMB Fare Saver Kiosk

KMB Fare Saver Kiosk is located at the bridge linking K.K. Leung Building and Knowles Building. By swiping your Adult/Student Octopus card, you can enjoy a fare discount of up to HK$4 when taking KMB buses.
Banking
The majority of banks are closed on Saturday afternoon and public holidays. There are two banks on the Main Campus, with details as follows:
HSBC
Bank of East Asia
There are a few ATM machines on campus, respectively located at the Haking Wong Podium, Run Run Shaw Podium and on the Centennial Campus.
Supermarket

The nearest wet market is the Shek Tong Tsui Market (about 10-minute walk from Hill Road).

There is one mini PARKnSHOP located on the 2/F of the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre. A larger International by PARKnSHOP can be found on 37-47 Bonham Road (about 10-minute walk from the Main Campus). Nearby a Wellcome can be found on 62 Bonham Road. Another larger Wellcome Superstore is at the Westwood (8 Belcher’s Street). 

Bookstore and Stationery

The Hong Kong University Press Bookshop (Tel: 3917 7801) is located on the G/F of Run Run Shaw Heritage House (next to the HKU Visitor Centre), Centennial Campus. 

The HKU Campus Store selling stationery and souvenirs is located on the UG1/F of Composite Building.

Photocopying

In addition to the facilities in your Faculty, there are a few areas, with photocopying machines available for general use:

  • 1/F and 2/F (CPD-1 and CPD-2) of the Chi Wah Learning Commons
  • The Main Library and branch libraries (Library patrons should observe the copyright ordinance when making photocopies for research or teaching purposes.)
  • Room 420, 4/F, Knowles Building (KRCC Production Company)
  • Shops along Bonham Road and Pokfulam Road (They provide reliable services at reasonable price. Some of them even offer binding services.)

Postal Services

There is a posting box on the Main Campus situated on the LG2/F of Knowles Building. The nearest Post Office is Sai Ying Pun Post Office (27 Pokfulam Road, Tel: 2921 2222), 5-minute walk from the east gate of the Main Campus.

Baby Care Rooms
Facilities such as washrooms with baby-changing table at the amenities centres, and baby care rooms at the Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre, The Jockey Club Tower, William M.W. Mong Block and the Prince Philip Dental Hospital are available to parent students, staff and visitors during their time on campus.

Learning Spaces

A variety of spaces are provided for individual and self-paced learning in the Learning Commons. These include quiet study areas, reading and lounging areas and individual workstations. Collaborative learning spaces are provided in the form of group study rooms, more traditionally styled work tables as well as diner booth style places that are well suited to group interactivity. 

The Chi Wah Learning Commons, located at the podium levels of the Centennial Campus, offers modern learning facilities that encourage and facilitate individual and group study.

Libraries

The HKU Libraries consists of the Main Library and six branch libraries: Dental Library, Fung Ping Shan Library, Lui Che Woo Law Library, Music Library, Tin Ka Ping Education Library and Yu Chun Keung Medical Library. The Main Library comprises an all-round collection of materials in arts, humanities, architecture, social sciences, and science and technology. The Libraries also has a rich collection of audio-visual materials and reserve materials, as well as the Special Collections which houses a unique collection of Hong Kong materials, rare books, pamphlets, and microforms. Learning Commons style facilities can be found in Level 3 of the Main Library and branch libraries providing a variety of spaces suitable for different learning styles including reflective self-study as well as collaborative study. Located on the 2/F of the Main Library, the Ingenium is an interdisciplinary space for the University community to be inspired by and to interact with technology.

Sports Facilities

Apart from offering a wide range of sports and fitness programmes, the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) mainly manages the following sports facilities, students are welcome to put in their booking through student portal within 7 days in advance.

  • Henry Fok Swimming Pool and Stanley Ho Sports Centre at Sandy Bay
  • 4 fitness centres in Henry Fok Health and Fitness Complex, the CSE ACTIVE (Centennial Campus), the HKU B-Active (Shek Tong Tsui) and Suen Chi Sun Hall Multi-purpose Room
  • 6 tennis courts at Stanley Ho Sports Centre
  • Multi-purpose rooms at Suen Chi Sun Hall and Ho Tim Hall
University Health Service

Eligibility
For students, there are many levels of medical benefits. Some students may not be eligible for UHS services. The eligibility of students is not known before registration. Once they have completed their registration at the University, students will receive a university card with a number. The level of medical benefit will be known by then.

All entitled students who paid composition fees are eligible. The University does not provide medical benefits for students’ families and dependants.

Primary Health Care on Campus
The University provides comprehensive primary health care to entitled students through a clinic on the main campus.

Medical consultations are generally free of charge. Certain medications, preventive services and other items are charged at cost. A notional charge is also levied for dental treatment and physiotherapy treatment at the University clinic.

Services include:

  • Primary medical care at the University Health Service
  • Specialist care and hospital care at the public specialist clinic or public ward of government hospitals by referral (for full-time students only and excluding any maternity care)
  • Preventive measures including Travel Health Service, Wellness Check-up, Well Woman Check-up and immunisations at a charge
  • Physiotherapy on the referral of UHS physicians at a charge
  • Assistance to students with disability
  • Health education in the form of individual advice, classes, workshops, exhibitions, website, posters and pamphlets
  • Dental service at a competitive charge
  • Medical aids, equipment and appliances may be provided at a charge
